Step One – Take a 2 Minute Survey

Fiber optic lightGoogle has announced their “Fiber for Communities” Project. It’s not about diet.

Google is planning to launch an experiment that we hope will make Internet access better and faster for everyone. We plan to test ultra-high speed broadband networks in one or more trial locations across the country. Our networks will deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today, over 1 gigabit per second, fiber-to-the-home connections. We’ll offer service at a competitive price to at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people. — Google Fiber for Communities

The city is preparing the “Government Response.” Now we need leaders from every part of the community to show support.

It takes just two minutes to answer a few questions about Lakeland and our current networking status. Nothing too technical, they’re simple questions about your Internet speed experience.

Please press the Nominate Your Community button at http://bit.ly/LakelandFiber and answer the questions you find…

Most are multiple choice questions…For the question “Why should Google build a fiber to the home network where you live?” we suggest …

Why not?!

Google products have consistently been innovative, thoughtful and useful. The capacity of a 1 gigabyte fiber is unheard of but, with the Google name attached, believable.

Lakeland would be fortunate to be the proving grounds for trailblazing technology. Lakeland embraces opportunities to advance our community. We are partnering with University of South Florida Polytechnic to, literally, turn a field into a world class polytechnic university.

Lakeland is also setting the groundwork for the federally funded high speed rail project and actively pursuing the development of more high-skill/high-wage industries. Lakeland is rapidly growing in size, population, and technology, thus making it the perfect place to host Google Fiber.

Want more?…

  • Continuous growth in Lakeland’s medical corridor, including groundbreaking medical research and transitions to electronic medical record keeping
  • We’re getting smarter! Funding is in place for our local utility, Lakeland Electric, to deploy a smart grid system to allow Lakeland residents more control of their energy use. At 1GB we’ll be able to save energy faster than the rising cost of petroleum.
  • Lakeland students and schools have received national recognition and awards for robotics and web programming (Our kids rock!)
  • Hello-o-o? …Location. Lakeland’s in the middle of two major cities (Orlando and Tampa). If Google Fiber is a hit (which it is sure to be), the opportunity to quickly expand service is only a few miles away in both directions
